in progress: Doctor Who

I'm currently working on reproducing the new Dr. Who suit and coat for my friend Beau to wear to Dragon Con in Atlanta.

The first thing we did was pick out the fabric for the coat.  It's being made up in light brown moleskin with a blue taffeta lining.  The red taffeta will be used for the inner Barcelona pockets (more on those later).

The next step was to render the coat and show the placement of all the seams, pockets and the shape and roll of the collar. We decided to play with the design of the coat a little, and moved the skirt pleats to the side back seams.

This is the pattern for the shell of the coat.  The back is pleated across the shoulders.  You can also see the pleats in the back of the skirt and the slash in the front where the pockets will be seated.

This image shows the pleat in the center back of the coat and the topstitching that secures it.

Here is the shell of the coat assembled.  You can see the sloping collar, the pocket flaps and the pleats in the back of the skirt.

These pictures show the completed left side lining and red pocket.  The lining is made of royal blue taffeta which has a very nice weight and body as well as a nice sheen.  Below is a detail of the modified Barcelona pocket for the inside of the coat.  I could have made a standard double welt pocket, but I thought the shape and style of the Barcelona was more unique and interesting and shows off the red taffeta much more prominently.

The finished collar and lapel with topstitching.

Here are a couple of detail pictures of the jacket.  On the left is the upper pocket.  It's a little hard to see with the stripes, but the patch pocket is pleated and the flap has a slight curve to the lower edge.  The back has a belt that runs across it at the waist, making the stripes on the back of the jacket go in two different directions.

And here's Beau in his finished costume.
